Nereid-X Project

A personally-produced LAN+USB+Memory expansion board for the Sharp X68000 series of retro computers.

A two-ink risograph print in deep navy and warm ochre, depicting a close-up of a compact circuit board with visible traces, connectors, and surface-mount components. The composition is technical and clean, with a soft paper texture and slight ink misregistration that gives it a handmade, zine-like feel.

About the Board

Nereid-X is an expansion board designed for Sharp X68000 (X680x0) computers, adding LAN connectivity, USB support, and additional memory in a single package. The project was developed and distributed personally by the site owner as a community-driven hardware effort for X68K enthusiasts.

Production History

Multiple production runs were carried out over the years. An initial batch was followed by a final production run, with pre-orders accepted during the 2002–2003 period. A later revival reproduction run followed in 2006, giving additional builders a chance to obtain the board.

Software & Tools

USB-related software tools were developed alongside the hardware to support the board's functionality. One such utility, usbmon, provided monitoring capabilities for USB activity on the X68000 platform.

Distribution & Support

All distribution and user support for Nereid-X were handled personally by the site owner. The board was offered through direct pre-order campaigns, with support provided to builders integrating the expansion into their X68000 systems.

For enthusiasts of the Sharp X68000 platform, the Nereid-X project represents the kind of community-driven hardware development that keeps vintage computing alive. By combining LAN connectivity, USB support, and expanded memory into a single expansion board, it addresses several practical limitations of the original system while preserving its authentic character. This kind of personally produced hardware reflects a broader tradition within the X68K community, where dedicated individuals contribute their own engineering skills and resources to create accessories and enhancements that were never officially offered. The effort involved in designing, producing, and distributing such boards is considerable, yet it underscores the enduring passion that keeps this Japanese retro computing platform relevant among collectors and hobbyists decades after its original release.
